The English language is spoken today in most parts of Europe, America, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and in some of the islands of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is spoken as a first language by 320 – 370 million people. It is also used as a second language by about the same number of people and as a foreign language by millions more.
The most distinctive variation of British English is American English. Despite many similarities these two languages bare certain differences.
The aim of this research paper is to reflect the most distinctive peculiarities of the British and American languages in authentic spoken and written sources.
This research paper consists of the introduction, five parts, conclusions and appendixes.
The first part includes the diffusion of the English language across the world and the most distinctive features in certain countries.
The second and the third parts present the history and the variation in British English.
The fourth and the fifth parts include practical analysis of the peculiarities in British and American languages.
The prime method of the research is analytical and contrastive analysis of the linguistic and historical material.
The main sources and ideas for the theoretical parts were drawn from Crystal’s The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of The English Language (1995) and Ginzburg’s A Modern English Lexicology (1979).
The material for the practical application was taken from the most famous American newspaper New York Times and the textbook Family Album USA (1991) was used. ...
