Teaching is the primary activity in the educational system. Teaching is usually followed by the assessment. There are three kinds of assessment: formal, informal, and self-assessment. Assessment is used to get accurate information about people’s ability to use foreign language.
Formal assessment is most frequently used kind of assessment by teachers. They use various kinds of tests to find out how much their students have achieved during certain time, to diagnose students’ strengths and weaknesses.
However, students may feel panic and confusion whenever a test is given by their teachers. Here informal assessment could be a great help to both sides because it is carried out by the teacher not under special test conditions but in the normal classroom environment (for example with students helping each other when necessary.
The third kind, most rarely used, is self-assessment. It is carried out by students themselves. Not only do teachers gather information through self-assessment but involvement of students in the assessment progress also means that their attitudes towards their own learning can change significantly. Rather than being motivated by threat of examinations, students can start feeling more responsible for their own progress.
So, if it is accepted that all three kinds of assessment are necessary, then the conclusion should be drawn that teachers should do everything they can to improve the practice of all three kinds of assessment.
This course paper will deal with all three kinds assessment. Different kinds of tasks and different advices on how to make a task reliable will be discussed. It will be tried to find out which kind of assessment is the most popular among teachers of English, whether students and their teachers consider self-assessment as a valuable kind of assessment in education process. ...
