Ištrauka

There are no information about metaphor use by early humans because there are no records of how they were using language, though metaphor is certainly a powerful element of modern pre-literate aboriginal cultures that seem to have had stable cultures for very long periods. From that time metaphor penetrated deeply into the literature and there appeared a great number of definitions of metaphor but all of them are rather similar. Metaphor is defined as the substitution of one idea or object to another, used to assist expression or understanding. However, philosophers and scientists have tended to be unimpressed by metaphor. They have often dismissed this sort of language as the kind of flowery decoration but in nowadays the attitude towards metaphor has extremely changed.
The subject of the work is the usage of the names of animals in English and Lithuanian languages.
The aim of the work is to compare animal metaphors of English and Lithuanian languages in semantic aspect. The objectives of the present work would be as follows:
1. To analyse theoretical material on the conception of metaphor.
2. To collect English and Lithuanian animal metaphors.
3. To divide them into thematic groups.
4. To make comparative analysis of English and Lithuanian animal metaphors.
The work is relevant in such a way, as the comparison of these animal metaphors of English and Lithuanian languages is rather significant for one who wants to know these languages fundamentally. Verbatim translation of animal metaphors is impossible.
The research methods include literary, descriptive, comparative and statistical analysis. In theoretical part the greatest attention was paid to the literary analysis of the theory of the traditional metaphor and zoomorphic metaphor. In the practical part of the work the descriptive and comparative analysis of English and Lithuanian animal metaphors was presented. Finally, the conclusions the of the work with the statistical analysis were presented. The material was gathered from various dictionaries, such as Didysis Anglų ir Lietuvių kalbos žodynas (Piesarskas, 2007), When analyzing animal metaphors in comparative languages, examples were compiled from the British National Corpus and from the Dictionary of Lithuanian language (The Internet addresses are refered in references).
The whole work consists of: introduction, theoretical and practical parts, conclusions and references. ...
